Residents will be able to enjoy water play feature at Yori Park

Thanks to the Ward Two Central Neighborhood Advisory Board (NAB) area residents will be able to enjoy the water play feature at Yori Park.

At last Wednesday’s Reno City Council Meeting, the Council approved a request from Ward Two Central NAB for $3,000 in Community Pride Grant (CPG) funds to the City of Reno Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. The CPG funds will be used to offset operating expenses associated with the water play feature at Yori Park.

Yori Park is a heavily used neighborhood park with a popular water play feature. Without the CPG allocation this feature would not be operational this summer due to budget restrictions. Turning the water play area on at Yori Park this summer encourages family visits while providing free entertainment and relief during the summer months.

Each NAB’s CPG funds are designed to be used for neighborhood-specific projects. These funds are allocated to projects that the City may not have budgeted for that the NAB would like to expedite. Funds are generally intended for projects that are short term in nature and quick to implement. While funding is recommended by the boards, its use and expenditure are guided by established city procurement, expenditure procedures, and ground rules.

Vancouver Paralympic Games Journal

Reno’s Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, April Wolfe, is at the 2010 Paralympic Experience Vancouver in Vancouver, Canada.  She was selected by U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, as one of only six program leaders from the United States chosen and sponsored to attend.  April is sending daily updates of her travels to friends and family.

Day 1 – Thursday, March 11

Wow…what a full and exciting day!  Once we all arrived in Vancouver and got group pictures out of the way, we headed to the athlete village for an exclusive tour behind the scenes.  We learned about the construction of the village, services available to the athletes (including 24hr medical center, 24hr cafeteria, unlimited Coke and other sponsored products, etc.).  We were given swag, shopped in the village, and ended the afternoon with dinner amongst the world’s paralympic athletes.  Can’t wait to see what Day 2 has in store for us. New Exhibits on Display at City of Reno’s Art Galleries

Three new exhibits will be on display at galleries operated by the city of Reno from February 15th – March 26th. Admission to these galleries is free. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Metro Gallery (City Hall, 1 East First Street)“The Faces of St. Vincent’s” is a photographic documentary of the clients of Catholic Community Services of Northern Nevada (CCSNN). Jeff Ross spent nearly a year capturing the men, women and children who receive food, shelter, education and support from CCSNN. More of Jeff’s work can be seen at jeffross.com.
  • Gallery East (McKinley Arts & Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive) – “Fotonostalgia” is an exhibition of recent work by Los Angeles photographer Sia Aryai. Emphasizing the sensual forms, figures, and emotions of women, the finished images evoke memories of everlasting, graceful beauty. Each moment has its own beautiful, unforgettable “Nostalgia”, conjuring memories of our youthful wistfulness: the moment when we first encounter the faded color pin-up on the wall of a gas station; our first crush on the girl next-door; the magical moment, the foto Nostalgia.
  • Gallery West (McKinley Arts & Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive) – In “Evidence and Artifacts: Particle Matter 2.5”, photographer Christopher Gauthier is exhibiting his most recent work made in the midst of ice, fog and inversion – a natural and manmade regional weather phenomenon in which beauty and toxicity combine. The singular perspective conveys the intimacy of isolated encounters with the consequences of progress and recession. An artist’s reception will be held February 25th from 5-7 p.m.

City of Reno Receives Grants Supporting Adaptive Recreation Services

The City Council accepted four grants today totaling $8,862 that help the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department offer adaptive recreation services to the community.

Grants from Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America ($300), United States Quad Rugby Association ($562), and United States Olympic Committee ($2,000) assisted with expenses related to Paralympic clinics held last fall.

The largest grant ($6,000) received from the National Recreation and Park Association will be used to expand the City’s adaptive equipment rental program that is available to injured service members and the community.

Reno’s adaptive equipment rental program offers sports wheelchairs, ice and roller sledges, bowling ramps, beach wheelchairs, handcycles, and foot-pedal trikes. Adaptive equipment enables people to participate in activities such as wheelchair basketball and quad rugby. The rental program is also an affordable way to test equipment before investing in it.  They can be rented for a day, weekend or full week at reasonable rates.

For additional information visit www.reno.gov or call April Wolfe, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist at 775-334-2262.

Reno Offers Winter Break Camps for Kids

We have camps at five different locations over the upcoming WCSD winter break for kids ages 6-15.  The camps operate from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday – Thursday.

In order to assist families and help them take advantage of affordable youth programs during the holiday season, the standard Thursday registration deadline has been lifted, and parents are able to register their children for camp by 9 a.m. the same day as attending.  No late fee will be assessed.

See the camp menu or call 775-334-2262 for more information.

Here’s a way to warm things up!

Baby, it’s cold outside!  But you can help warm things up by participating in the “Jump Shots for Jackets” winter clothes drive at the Reno Events Center on December 13 prior to the Reno Bighorns game.

Just bring a new or gently used coat, jacket, hat or gloves to help the underprivileged. The first 150 fans to donate any of those items will receive a lift ticket, courtesy of the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. (A $60 value!)

Beginning at 1 p.m., a Reno Fire Department ladder truck and the Reno Police Department’s K-9 unit will be on-hand outside the Reno Events Center for children to enjoy. Bruno, the Bighorns’ beloved mascot, and members of the Reno Dance Team will also be on-hand to sign autographs and mingle with the crowd. Read the rest of this entry »

Tree Lighting Ceremony – Flash Mob and Holiday Ice Spectacular

Nearly 1,000 residents came downtown for the annual tree lighting ceremony and free skate night at the Rink on the River. This year the Billinghurst Middle School Choir sang before Mayor Bob Cashell pushed the button to light the 44-foot tree. Spectators were surprized when a flash mob broke out in the crowd with about 150 dancers of all ages doing a mix of dances to holiday music. The grand finale was a performance on the ice by the Eldorado Hotel Casino’s Holiday Ice Spectacular. Residents could skate for free if they brought new gloves and hats for a donation to needy residents.
